A new car is an exciting, but major investment. While you may do everything in your power to keep that new-car-smell lingering long into the future, the fate of your car’s cleanliness can often be decided by others.
Rather than watching your passengers like a hawk through the rearview mirror, protect your car’s upholstery from the day you drive out of the dealership. Don’t let dirty shoes, a rainy day or the daycare drop off stop your car from looking and smelling its best. Follow our step-by-step guide and protect your car upholstery with a non-toxic fabric protector and cleaner.
Step 1: Find the best guy for the job
Car detailing professionals claim that finding an effective car upholstery cleaner is the most critical part of the process. We couldn’t agree more! Lucky for you, the search is now over before it’s even begun! Our car fabric protector is an environmentally friendly, water-based protectant that’s free from harmful chemicals. The best part is, you don’t need to sacrifice quality to put your family and the Earth first. Our nanotechnology spray is incredibly effective in repelling food, dirt, liquids and spills, without altering the look or feel of your car’s interior.
Doing your product research can set you up for success here, as many online sources will encourage the use of ‘trusted’ brands like Scotch Gard or Guardsman. Despite a longstanding appearance in the market, these products contain toxic ingredients that are harmful to the health of your family. protectME is a water based, safe alternative to Scotch Gard that will get the job done durably, and won’t pose any health risks.
Step 2: Prepare for protection
If your odometer isn’t on zero, it’s a good idea to give your car upholstery a thorough clean before using a protector spray. Vacuum any dirt or food crumbs from the seats and floors, shake out mats and wipe down windows with a micro-fibre cloth. Once you’re confident the interior is clean, it’s time to move on to the all-important protection!
Step 3: Protect
Our car fabric protector is safe to use on car seats, carpet flooring, mats, soft top convertible roofs, baby seats and baby capsules. The best part is, you can apply it at home and don’t need to pay a professional to do the job. Start with one coat, using about 80-100 ml per m2. You can apply an additional coat for thicker fabrics (refer to our How to apply page for more details). Allow between 12-24 hours for the protector to dry, and you’re all set! Unlike mainstream fabric protectors formulated with toxic chemicals, our non toxic formula doesn’t require you to vacate the premises during the drying period.
Step 4: Upkeep
The protective coating will continue to repel dirt and liquid for up to 3 years, depending on the fabric and traffic, with adequate upkeep. Here are a few tips to keeping your car clean year round.
- Keep a towel or cloth in the car to wipe any spills (a gentle fabric will prevent any abrasions on leather upholstery).
- Block the sun from beaming down through your windscreen with a sun visor. A sun visors will block harmful UV rays from damaging your car’s interior.
- Vacuum regularly, paying attention to cracks and crevasses that are liable to crumbs or dirt build-ups.
Using a car fabric protector alongside regular upkeep will maintain the appearance of your car’s interior, and will increase its value if it ever comes time to sell or trade in.
